This past year I’ve been sowing and growing things in our little garden and I thought I’d share some pics now that it’s all looking lovely and fruitful. Because of the set up of our house (an old Victorian Alms House) we have a massive green at the front of our house which we share with the 11 other cottages in the row, and then each of us has a small allotment style garden at the back. We have an army of rabbits all around us, so we had to start the plot off by digging in chicken wire around the edges to keep them at bay.

So far we’ve harvested radishes, lettuces, peas, broad beans, Italian beans, spinach, courgettes and right now we’ve got some fennel, spring onions, potatoes, purple sprouting broccoli and petit posi (a cross between brussels sprouts and spring greens) growing on, as yet to come to fruition.

At the South facing front of the house (where it gets pretty hot with the red bricks) we’ve got tomatoes, basil and some peppers growing in pots as well as a Bay, Olive and a young Cherry Tree. Our harvests have been very fruitful so far this year with all the good weather, and by the looks of it we’re going to have a bumper crop of tomatoes which I’m planning on turning into chutney. All in all it’s been good fun and surprisingly, I’ve found it quite addictive growing things. Just can’t wait to get a bigger plot one day.

These tomatoes are tumbler varieties that cascade over the edges of containers. I’ve been really pleased with them.

On Wednesday my mum and I went to Ardingly Showground to one of the largest antique fairs in the country which happily happens to be down the road from us. I can’t tell you how big the fair was – and we by no means visited all of it. Everything antique you could ever think of wanting was there.

I wasn’t planning on spending much but the choice and opportunities to buy some cool stuff were amazing. I was looking for some largeish containers for my bay, olive and cherry trees that will all need potting on soon. I found some great pieces for that purpose but then of course I was struck by temptation/bargains not to pass up.

I also got a vintage steel A4 paper drawer filing cabinet for a price of £20 that will need some work. It’s got a lot of rust and flaking paint, but I’d like to strip it back to mirrored steel (if I ever get round to that).

I also found a 1950’s Italian accordian for James (which helped soften the later blow) which I bargained down to £25. Something he’d been looking out for and hoping to get one day.

And a final purchase, completely unplanned and at the very last minute, I bought a sweet little drop arm, 2 seater sofa and armchair for £65, again, probably dating from the 1950’s. They were in great condition, super compfey but probably in need of a new set of covers as I’m not fond of their current exterior (however it’ll do for now).

All in all a great day. If I ever need any more furniture then I’ll definitely wait till the next show at Ardingly. Every seller seemed happy to accept lower offers so a bit of bargaining was the order of the day. Can’t wait to get my friends the Salvage sisters along – they’d love it!

Excuse the lack of posts but I’ve been on holiday. Although we had a good time, it didn’t half rain. We were in the Dordogne region in France and luckily for us there’s quite a bit of sightseeing to do. We ended up going to see a couple of prehistoric caves. Lascaux was one of them, well Lascaux II actually, the replica they built to preserve the original that was being damaged by all the visitors. Read about it here.

Lascaux is a very important cave as it’s covered in prehistoric cave paintings. It was only found by chance when a tree blew over to expose a hole and a dog got stuck down it in 1940. It is now know as the sistene chapel of cave paintings.

It was fascinating to see all the drawings, some quite naive, others more sophisticated. They don’t know why there were painted. You go there and try and work it out but I guess no one will ever know. The peculiar thing is horses, bulls, stags, cats, a bird, a bear, a human, a rhino were all painted but never a reindeer, and they were apparently eating reindeer 16,000 years ago when it was painted so it’s odd that they left them out.

There are also a lot of curious geometric symbols interspersed with the animals.
